Ever wanted to feel like a true master of the crafts in an RPG? Then I have some good news for you because in Path of Exile you can fulfill this ambition in quite a profitable way. In this guide, we will cover the aspects and elements of the crafting system of the game to help create items to suit your rising need on your journey.

Throughout your playthrough, you will find more and more ways to alter or upgrade your equipment in several ways. Here we will talk about crafting with basic currency items.

The most basic way of crafting is increasing the rarity of an item, which gives it more modifiers. Let's start with a normal (white) item. If you want to upgrade it you can use three types of orbs. Orb of transmutation will upgrade it to magic (blue). Orb of chance will roll a dice and upgrade your normal weapon to any higher quality. Finally, the orb of alchemy will upgrade your item to rare (yellow).

These methods are very inexpensive but the results are quite haphazard since the rolled mods are random.

Still being a random but a bit more advanced method is using a chaos orb on a rare item, that reforges its modifiers and spamming this until you are content with the outcome. The same result can be achieved by using an orb of scourging, an item that removes all modifiers, and an orb of alchemy afterward.

A more focused but also more expensive way of crafting can be achieved by using the alt/regal/exalted method. This involves using several orbs to get to the desired item.

Step by step this includes:

Start with a normal item (preferably a high-level one) and use an orb of transmutation on it to upgrade it to magic
Then spam orb of alterations to reroll its modifiers until you are happy with what you got
Use a regal orb to upgrade it to rare, if you roll an unwanted mod scour it (orb of scourging) and start over. At this stage, although it is not necessary, you may want to use an eternal orb to create an imprint of your item with the bestiary mechanic. This sort of creates you a safety net if your next mods turn out bad and this way you won't have to start over.
Use three exalted orbs or other meta-crafting to add additional modifiers 
Return to your imprint if you aren't content with your roll with an eternal orb
Use blessed or divine orbs to roll for higher numeric values on mods if needed or if you prefer. 

There is a way to narrow down and improve your crafting options by using meta-crafting mods. For example, you can lock in prefixes with the "of prefixes" mod and suffixes with the "suffixed" mod. You can even limit the types of mods you roll for with the "of weaponcraft" or the "of spellcraft" mods making you unable to roll caster or attack modifiers. The best part is, that there is even a way to stick multiple of these on an item by another meta-crafting mod, the "of crafting" mod. I think you can imagine how useful this can be if you are looking to create your perfect item. Be wary though these crafted mods all cost exalted orbs.

A last bit of spice you may consider for your item is corrupting it. This is achieved by putting a Vaal orb on it. This can improve an item even further in special ways but can also mess with your links and sockets (luckily, this can be fixed at the crafting bench) or can even totally reroll and break the item. After being corrupted an item cannot be modified further and you are stuck with what you got so be mindful when you plan on corrupting an item.
